About Me

Hi, my name is Neela, and I'm an aspiring creative. I'm trying out all sorts of things right now including graphic design, photography, t-shirt design, web design, and anything else that grabs my attention. I created this blog in order to keep on track with my career path and keep my skills updated. So far, so good. :)

The Story of the Pencil

Last semester I went to Sydney, Australia and interned at Griffen Creative, an advertising agency. It was a lot of fun, and I actually got to do a lot of creative work for them.
Along with that, I made this pencil:

I put a lot of thought into it, and at one point I thought it was too much thought. So this version is actually the simplified one (I know).
I made a sketch on paper and traced it using Illustrator. And then I just played with the brush tool, which I think is addicting. So addicting, that I ended up with all of these…

Ok so the story:
As cheesy as it may sound, this is a living pencil. The designs inside are organs.
At the top is the brain, a little below are lungs with the heart, then some squigglies and the stomach and after that the intestines and some more squigglies. Very precise.

Why did I do this?
Well, at my internship I needed to come up with something that would describe me, for my portfolio project. I know… I’m not a pencil, but I like to think that when I create something, I put my everything into it. The designs are “squiggly” but intricate, kind of how I’m laid back but also hard working. The pencil has a personality, and I try to put mine into the work I do.

But I didn’t include an eraser, not because I don’t make mistakes (oh so many….) but because I hope that my ideas can be memorable.

My plan is to do something with these pencils… maybe create my website around them or use Flash to animate them. Just to get the pencil rolling :)

I'm Done with College!

And now...
I'm officially entering the job market. I've been told that it's important to make sure there isn't a gap in my resume between finishing school and my first job, so I've found a solution. How do I make this intermission in my life as productive as possible?
After looking at possible companies I could apply to (for advertising, art direction, graphic design, marketing, and anything creative), I’ve gathered all the requirements and skills that I need to work on to increase my chances. And that’s what I’m going to do.

My goals:
  1. Master Flash and Dreamweaver (and HTML)
  2. Make an online portfolio
  3. Learn about Quark Xpress and After Effects (since I don’t have the actual programs on my laptop)
  4. Continue my t-shirt designs (I love hand-painting t-shirts)
  5. Do some community service in India (we’re going there for a month in Feb)
  6. Finalize my portfolio book

I have the urge to say I don’t know how much of that I will actually complete, but after this time I’m never going to say that again!!
New Years resolution: check.
